Hi Rosanna, we empathize with the high and growing costs of medical care which you face. We are affected by them too, as well as all too many other people. Please feel free to call me or my colleagues during business hours to discuss your situation.

I recommend Temple Grandin's book, The Way I See It. There is a chapter on behavior that gives suggestions on managing tantrums from someone who was on the giving end of them.

I would like to have my four year old son evaluated by Dr. Miranda, but on a tight teacher's salary I would need financial assistance to make the 2,000 mile trip and pay for initial MRI screenings. I've looked into fundraising and have considered joining research studies that use MRIs on subjects to try to offset some of the expense. I was wondering if there are any organizations or programs that help families meet the costs of these types of evaluations.

Hi Manaa,
We appreciate your frustration with your cousin incidentally hurting himself. As far as how to manage him, the particulars are long and complicated. There is no out of box formula. The child needs to be evaluated. This is Dr. Miranda's response. Best of luck with whatever approach(es) you choose and feel free to contact our office.
Regards,
Ken

Thank-you for the information about how the brain reacts to external stimuli!
According to your suggestion, we should not react with opposing force to their aggression! But most of the time it is not possible for the parents!
My cousin constantly plays with water and he frequently gets sick due to cold! Also, as other autistic children, he is hyperactive and destroys things if we fail to give any attention to his where abouts!
The main problem is when he is stopped to do such things, he either shouts or attacks!
Are there any strategies to divert his attention?
